Car finance and personal loan FAQs

The short answer

How does car finance work in New Zealand?

Car finance works by a lender paying for the vehicle while you repay that amount, plus interest and fees, over an agreed term, usually with the vehicle as security. With Finance Made Easy you apply online and we aim to give you an initial decision quickly, often within an hour during business hours. Funding usually follows within 24 to 48 hours of approval.

Apply online, or call us on 0800 995 014 if you would rather talk. The application covers your income, your regular outgoings and what the loan is for. We then aim to give you an initial decision quickly, often within an hour during business hours, and the lender verifies your details before final approval.

Lenders usually verify three things: who you are, where you live and what you earn. That typically means your driver licence, something showing your current address, and recent evidence of your income from work. We tell you exactly what your lender asks for, so you only gather what is needed.

We aim to give you an initial decision quickly, often within an hour of applying during business hours. Final approval follows once the lender has verified your details. After the loan is approved and the documents are signed, funding usually follows within 24 to 48 hours.

No. A quote or call-back request is an enquiry, with no obligation to go ahead. Nothing goes to a lender until you have applied and agreed to proceed, and any credit check is done with your consent.

No. Applications are not an offer of finance. Every loan is subject to lender criteria, affordability, verification and responsible lending checks, and only the lender can give final approval.

The process

How does car finance work, step by step?

The same five steps apply to a vehicle loan and a personal loan. Every application is subject to lender criteria, and applications are not an offer of finance.

  1. 01

Apply online, or call if you prefer

Apply online whenever suits you, or call 0800 995 014 if you would rather talk. A rough idea of the amount you need is enough to begin.

  2. 02

    Your application

It covers your work and income, your regular outgoings, and what the loan is for. If you apply by phone instead, it takes 5 to 10 minutes.

  3. 03

    A quick initial decision

We aim to come back to you within the hour during business hours. An initial decision is conditional: the lender still has to verify your details before it approves the loan.

  4. 04

    Verification and loan documents

The lender confirms your identity, address and income, then issues loan documents showing the interest rate, fees, repayments and total amount repayable.

  5. 05

    Signing and funding

Once the loan is approved and you have signed, funding usually follows within 24 to 48 hours.

Lease or buy

Is it better to lease or buy a car in New Zealand?

Neither is better for everyone. Buying, with cash or a car loan, means the car is yours to keep or sell. Leasing means paying to use a car for a set period, then handing it back. Finance Made Easy arranges loans, not leases.

Worth knowing

What are the downsides of car finance?

The main downside is cost: you repay more than the price of the car, because interest and fees are added. Car finance also commits you to repayments for the whole term, and the car is usually security for the loan.

You can see how the term changes an estimate by trying a few options in the repayment calculator. Calculator results are estimates only.

  • A longer term lowers each repayment but usually means more interest over the life of the loan.
  • Cars lose value, so early in a loan you can owe more than the car would sell for.
  • With a secured loan, the lender can repossess the car if repayments are not made.
  • Repayments stay the same if your income changes, so the budget has to work on a lean month too.

Before you buy

What’s the smartest way to finance a car?

There is no single answer, but many buyers settle the finance before they choose the car. Knowing the budget first keeps the decision about the car separate from the decision about the loan, whichever vehicle finance option they use.

  1. 01Setting a budget that includes running costs: insurance, fuel, servicing, WOF and registration.
  2. 02Estimating repayments across a few loan terms, not just the shortest or the longest.
  3. 03Getting an initial decision before shopping, so the price range is clear.
  4. 04Comparing the total amount repayable, not only the weekly repayment.
  5. 05Deciding whether a used vehicle needs one of our mechanical warranties, arranged through a range of warranty providers.

Applications are not an offer of finance. All lending is subject to lender criteria, affordability, verification and responsible lending checks. Calculator results are estimates only. This page is general information, not financial advice.
