Motorbike and scooter finance

The short answer

Can you get finance for a motorbike or scooter in New Zealand?

Yes. Motorbike finance in New Zealand is available for road bikes, motorcycles and scooters, and works much like a car loan: the lender pays for the bike and you repay it in regular instalments. Finance Made Easy is a finance broker servicing all of New Zealand, for dealer or private sales. Apply online and we aim to give you an initial decision quickly, often within an hour during business hours.

Worth it?

Is it smart to finance a motorbike?

It can be, when the repayments sit comfortably inside your budget and the bike does a real job for you, such as getting to work.

Finance spreads the cost of a bike over time, but interest and any fees mean you repay more than the purchase price. Look at the total amount repayable, not only the weekly figure, and try a few scenarios on our motorbike loan calculator. Calculator results are estimates only.

It also helps to budget for the running costs that come with owning a bike:

  • Riding gear: helmet, jacket, gloves, boots and pants.
  • Insurance, registration and a current warrant of fitness.
  • Servicing, tyres and chain replacement.
  • Cover for unexpected repair bills. We arrange mechanical warranties through a range of warranty providers, with or without a loan; ask whether cover is available for your bike.

Getting approved

How easy is it to finance a motorcycle?

If you are working and the repayments are affordable on your income, the process is simple to start: apply online and we aim to give you an initial decision quickly, often within the hour during business hours. Approval still depends on lender criteria.

We are upfront about who we can help: if your main income is a benefit, or you are not currently working, we cannot arrange finance, and we will tell you so politely at the start.

Lenders look at the whole picture: your income and how steady it is, your existing commitments, your credit history and the bike you want to buy. Having these ready speeds things up:

  • Your driver licence.
  • Proof of address.
  • Proof of income, such as recent payslips.
  • Details of the bike if you have found one: make, model, year and price.

Credit history

What is the minimum credit score to finance a motorcycle?

There is no single minimum credit score for motorcycle finance in New Zealand. Each lender sets its own criteria and assesses your whole application rather than one number.

Your credit history matters, but so do your income, your existing debts and how the loan fits your budget. The age, value and type of bike can also affect how a lender views the application.

The simplest way to find out where you stand is to talk to us, and to be open about anything on your credit file. All lending is subject to lender criteria.

Road, trail or scooter

Can you get finance for a scooter?

Talk to us about the bike you have in mind, from a commuter scooter to a road bike, tourer or adventure bike. Scooter finance follows the same process as a motorcycle loan; whether a particular bike can be financed depends on the lender, its age and value, and your application.

Buying from a dealer? Compare any promotional finance on offer with broker-arranged finance; the table further down sets out the differences. Buying privately is fine too, subject to lender criteria.

On a learner or restricted licence? Check with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi which motorcycles you are allowed to ride before you choose, so the bike you finance is one you can ride legally.

Weighing up a car or ute instead? Our vehicle finance page covers the other vehicles you can talk to us about.
